speaking of APEX
Dear friends of APEX,
I have just returned from a series of consultations in Atlantic Canada and Manitoba which provided me with a sense of what issues are of key importance to some of our regional members. It is clear that regional executives would welcome more information to help them connect with some of the context here in Ottawa. At the same time, they have their own issues to focus on, which often relate directly to service to Canadians. Many of the issues which preoccupy our members in the National Capital Region are not as top of mind in the regions and vice versa, and is a signal that it would be beneficial to have an enhanced exchange of information in departments and agencies between regional offices and Ottawa to better understand each others’ context. Consultations will continue in the National Capital region and further West and we will keep you informed on the dates and locations shortly.
Speaking of current issues, you have no doubt seen and heard speculation in the media about possible changes to the compensation package for federal public servants. We have a new Visiting Executive, Donna Kirby, who has joined us from Human Resources and Development Canada (HRSDC) who will be a key member of the team working on this file. We will be ready to respond should the government propose changes - either as a Budget measure or in another manner. In the near future, look for links on this site for key documents and information on this important file.
I hope that many of you have already marked your calendars for our annual 2010 APEX Symposium to be held on June 1-2 at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa. This year’s theme is “ Performance: Leadership Matters”. Our conference will focus on organizational performance, and the importance of leadership in helping organizations reach and meet their performance goals. You will see more details on the upcoming Symposium here, and you can register now.
You may have noticed a new feature on our website titled “ Here and Now”. We feel that collectively we could celebrate more properly the creative work which is carried out by federal public servants. APEX will periodically highlight interesting and strong initiatives under “Here and Now” and welcome any suggestions you may have from your own organization. Our first posting acknowledges the work Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) has done on Talent Management.
As we move through February, you will see that the Winter 2010 learning events have begun. I am very pleased to report that we have had strong participation over the last few months, and that we have been receiving positive feedback from both attendees and our professional coaches and facilitators delivering the sessions. In addition, there was such an overwhelming response in the NRC to our first in a series of workshops being delivered in 2010, entitled
"You and our Pension ", that we regret we were not able to accommodate everyone wishing to attend. We are currently looking at other ways to meet the high demand for this information and we will request that the seminar be offered again in 2010-2011. Stay tuned!
I encourage members to periodically explore the Members Only site. The information is refreshed regularly and covers a number of areas, including services available, the collected wisdom of experienced senior officials on practical workplace issues, and affinity programs for members.
As always, please feel free to contact me or any member of the team at any time. We welcome your thoughts, opinions and inquiries.
